HAAC, health and happy motherhood

The Holistic Anti-Aging Center, running at selected Six Senses Spas, was developed with Dr. Claudia Aguirre. She shares her experience as a new mother and how the fourth trimester is a vital time for women to understand their health.

Congratulations to Dr. Claudia Aguirre, neuroscientist, mind-body expert, TEDx speaker and now mother to two-month old baby boy Sky. Having joined forces with the Six Senses Wellness Board to introduce the Holistic Anti-Aging Center (HAAC) in May 2018, she now appreciates more than ever how important it is for women to be their own advocate, especially in key transitional stages such as childbearing years.

“The fourth trimester is incredibly important. No woman should be doing this alone. My pregnancy was super easy which was lucky, but after giving birth I had all sorts of issues, from excess fluid from the IV through to back ache from breastfeeding. It is so important to dig deeper into what might be going on especially during key changes to our bodies, and that’s where wellness comes in.”

Dr. Claudia believes in looking inwards to find patterns within our own body. For example, break-outs on the skin could be related to our cycle if they’re occurring every month, or from raised stress levels. They can also be down to inflammation in the body, because disrupted sleep patterns can impact your inflammatory state.

“After a couple of months of highly fragmented sleep, I’ve really begun to understand how important sleep and nutrition are,” says Dr. Claudia. “After childbirth the body goes through such tremendous changes, from night sweats due to plummeting progesterone through to hunger and fatigue. Your brain learns to function in a totally different universe, so you’re aware of the slightest of sounds from your baby. Men don’t go through the bodily changes, but they also have to adjust. You’re in a whole different ballpark, and therefore have to make a conscious effort to structure in self-care time.”

For Dr. Claudia, this is where structured programs such as HAAC come in, because they cue you in to the changes that might be happening, and the best way to approach them.

“Going on a structured program really opens your eyes to sleep and diet, as well as habits that may have formed over years and the negative impact they are having on your body. For example, microbes in your gut are killed off by traveling due to the changes in time zones and diet, and the impact can be as dramatic as antibiotics. These changes are then reflected in your mind and on your skin. A program such as HAAC is better than just a break, because a vacation relaxes you but doesn’t set you up with anything proactive to follow when you get home.”

All guests on the HAAC program learn about positive affirmations during the program, and also receive ongoing support through guidance videos and a journal to take home. You also have the opportunity to change your relationship to diet, becoming more mindful about what you eat and how you move.

“As a neuroscientist I use the body to reach a state of mind that is more balanced and appreciative of what we have that will result in a healthier gut, skin and mind. And the benefits can last a lifetime.”

The HAAC program consists of three key stages: cleanse, restore and nourish. It is an active journey, which starts with a wellness screening, and a skin and sleep analysis so that experts can personalize the program to suit your specific needs. Self-guided activities embrace mindfulness and include mental cleanse, journaling and affirmation practices, encouraging guests to look at themselves without judgment and celebrate what they see. The accompanying nutritional plan is based on an anti-inflammatory approach, using fresh, mineral rich foods that are abundant in antioxidants to fight free radical damage to skin, hair and nails. Through this program, you will come to understand that outer beauty comes from a healthy body and a happy mind, just as much as proper skincare.
