There is a famous saying in Maldives: “From root to tip, every part of the coconut tree is of use to Maldivians.” Here’s how we harvest the goodness of coconuts for everyday health and beauty regimes at Six Senses Spa Laamu.
As one of the most abundant natural resources available on the remote islands of Maldives, locals have learned to leverage the humble coconut for its economic, medical and nutritional value since ancient times. Inspired by its importance, Six Senses Spa Laamu in Maldives has curated an array of treatments using pretty much all of it.
Among the most famous treatments is Laamu Kaashi Theyo, which translates to Laamu Coconut Oil. This soothing treatment is recommended for all skin types in need of reviving or rehydrating after a long flight. Our award-winning therapists start the treatment with a gentle body rub using the coconut oil, followed by a relaxing massage to release tension from your neck, shoulders, and upper back. After your whole body is lathered in oil, they apply a body wrap, made using coconut meat, coconut milk, honey and finely-ground coconut shell. During the body wrap, your hair is conditioned with warm coconut milk.
We also offer the Laamu Balinese Bliss, a 120-minute experience that starts a full body massage using coconut oil followed by the application of a warm wrap made of ginger and cloves. Let any worries float away with a relaxing head massage and a cucumber conditioner to cool and refresh your scalp and smooth and hydrate your hair.
If you’re won over by the magic elixir of coconut oil, you can try the following beauty remedies at home.
For a body scrub, mix 3 tablespoons (15 milliliters) of oil with 1 tablespoon (5 milliliters) of brown sugar. Don’t forget your feet; after a gentle pumice exfoliation, rub in the oil and slip on a pair of (old) socks overnight.
Apply to damp or dry hair and massage the oil into the scalp (even better if someone massages it for you), wait 15 minutes, then rinse with warm water. You can use a small amount as a leave-in conditioner.
If you’re skeptical about cleaning your face with coconut oil, don’t be. Mix 2 teaspoons of coconut oil with 1.5 teaspoons of organic honey and cool until it hardens slightly. Apply the facemask using small circular strokes, and leave on for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing. Honey has strong antibacterial and antiviral properties, making it great for soothing inflammation.
In addition to slathering your body with coconut oil, the natural liquid from young fruit can be used as an ideal alternative fitness drink. With less than 40 calories per 250 milliliters serving, it contains natural electrolytes, minerals, potassium and magnesium. It’s a great source of easily digested carbohydrates and is 95 percent hydrating water.
